Dr.SimonTsuowasborninChinain1948justoneyearbeforetheconclusionofitscivilwar,inwhichhisfatherledmorethan4,000menonthenationalist(KMT)side.AftertheKMT’sdefeatintheChineseCivilWarandhisfamily’sfleeingonaseizedtankerboat,Dr.Tsuogrewupunderitsexiled“onepartystate”inTaiwan.There,helearnedtonavigatetheTaiwanofhisyouth,andlikemanyofthepost-wargeneration,heexcelledacademicallyinordertoqualifyforfurtheropportunitiesinAmerica.
